"During Chanukah we are celebrating the miracle that the jar of oil that was only enough for one day lasted 8 days. So why do we celebrate 8 instead of 7? If the jar was enough to last for one day, technically only the additional 7 days are a miracle. We celebrate for 8 days because we need to remember that nature itself is also a miracle. What we perceive as “nature” is still the hand of Hashem, guiding every aspect of our lives and world. The things that we are used to are also a gift, and we should be grateful for it all!"

As we delve more this week into the life of Avraham, we ask ourselves, why is he tested time and time again? The answer lies within the multiple meanings of the Hebrew word nes, the root of nisayon which means test. The word nes literally means banner. A test then, is not just a measure of the subject's qualities. A test is also raising a banner, exhibiting to the world the amazing qualities of the one being tested. Thus, G-d tested Avraham in order to demonstrate, to all the world, Avraham's unshakeable commitment to G-d. There is, however, another layer of depth to a test. Nes also means miracle. What connection is there between a test, nisayon, and the root nes, miracle? Avraham's trials were not merely a test to measure his commitment to G-d nor merely a banner raised to demonstrate it, but also -- and most importantly -- a challenge allowing Avraham to break out of his own personality constraints, miraculously (nes), and reach a level he never thought possible. When faced with challenges we are being gifted the opportunity to reach our ultimate potential and achievement.
